Hanging scroll, ink and colors on paper. Inscription and signature by the artist: “In the tenth month of the year 1965 inscribed by Lin Sanzhi.” Four seals of the artist: “Lin Sanzhi yin” etc. Inscription by the son of the artist, Lin Xiaozhi, on the mounting at the lower left.
According to the owners, from a private collection in Hesse, collected between 1970 and 2007
Lin Sanzhi was from Jiangpu in Jiangsu province. In 1929 he moved to Shanghai and studied painting with Huang Binhong (1864-1955). In 1963 he became teacher at the Jiangsu Academy of Chinese Painting in Nanjing. He specialized in calligraphy in cursive script (caoshu). After an accident which hurt his right hand badly, he developed a special style of ‘iron line’ in his calligraphy, for which he became famous. In Japan he was called ‘the sage of cursive script’
